Yankees manager Aaron Boone gave an update on Giancarlo Stanton before Tuesdays series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays and made it clear that the team will be without their slugging DH longer than anticipated.
Boone told the media, including the Daily News’ Gary Phillips, that he doesnt expect Stanton to play for the Yankees right after the All-Star break, but he could be getting ready to play at that point. When asked whether Stanton will need a rehab assignment, the Yankees skipper said he doesnt know just yet.
Stanton was placed on the injured list on June 23 with a left hamstring strain. The Yankees are 3-10 since his injury.
The Yankees return to action after the All-Star Game on Friday, July 19. If Stanton isnt ready to play at that point, it’s likely the former NL MVP will be out until August, especially if he needs to play in rehab games.
Prior to his injury, Stanton was having a bounceback season in pinstripes. In 69 games, Stanton is slashing .246/.302/.794 with 18 home runs and 45 RBI.
