Watch Out For Oilers’ Latest Breakout Candidate

EDMONTON — He might not have an extension yet, but he’s coming back in a big way.

Dylan Holloway of the Edmonton Oilers had an up and down season in 2023-24, culminating in a strong playoff showing.

During the regular season he collected nine points in 38 games, averaging 11:22 of ice time per game. In the playoffs he scored seven points in 25 games and averaged 11:30 for ice time. Holloway finished ranked second in the playoffs in hits with 86. He was just one hit behind Sam Bennett of the Florida Panthers.

In the regular season he had a 0.24 points per game (P/GP) pace. Holloway steadily improved on that with a 0.28 P/GP pace in the postseason. That improvement is certainly marginal. However, if Holloway can consistently play at least 14 minutes a night, it’s not unreasonable to suggest he could be a 40 point player over a full season.

Holloway is more skilled than he gets credit for. He had multiple multi-goal performances during these past playoffs. He also became the youngest Oilers player to record a multi-goal game in the Stanley Cup Final.

Of course, the elephant in the room is that Holloway is without a contract for the upcoming 2024-25 season. There hasn’t been much news in this regard for Holloway or Philip Broberg.

With Holloway’s increased aggressive play in the playoffs and a larger role, there is no reason why he won’t have a breakout season.
