Statement issued condemning violence after Uruguay’s match with Colombia

The disciplinary committee of CONMEBOL has confirmed it has opened an investigation into the incidents following the conclusion of the match between Uruguay and Colombia.

Footage showed Uruguay’s players including Liverpool forward Darwin Núñez wading into the stands at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte after violence reportedly broke out in a section that included the players’ families.

“Obviously if someone is attacking your family you want to go and defend them but that doesn’t justify the image that it created,” former Liverpool man Luís Suarez told the press.

The governing body has strongly condemned the ‘acts of violence’ and will likely now take action against those involved.
