Sabres Should Target Disgruntled Maple Leafs Forward

The Buffalo Sabres have made several forward additions this offseason. Their newcomers on offense include Jason Zucker, Ryan McLeod, Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Sam Lafferty, and Beck Malenstyn. While they have certainly added to their bottom-six depth, they still have yet to bring in a skilled forward for their top six.

At this juncture of the offseason, all of the big-name free agents who hit the market have found their new homes. Due to this, if the Sabres hope to add a skilled forward before the start of the season, they will likely need to browse the trade market.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nick Robertson is one specific trade candidate who could be a rather intriguing addition to the Sabres’ roster.

Robertson, 22, notably requested a trade from the Maple Leafs earlier this offseason. It is understandable, as he has had trouble cementing himself a permanent spot in the Maple Leafs’ lineup. However, he has been solid even with limited chances with the Maple Leafs.

During this past season with the Maple Leafs, Robertson had a solid offensive campaign, recording new career highs with 14 goals, 13 assists, and 27 points. With numbers like these, Robertson could have a real shot of playing consistent middle-six minutes with the Sabres if acquired. In addition, he would also have plenty of potential to play on the Sabres’ power play.

While the Sabres and Maple Leafs are division rivals, they could be willing to do business with each other for the right price. The Sabres have an array of notable prospects who could interest the Maple Leafs in a potential Robertson swap. They also have former first-round pick Peyton Krebs, who they could add to a potential move.
