Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket.
In this metaphor, the Detroit Red Wings are drafting players from around the world and not monopolizing one geographical area, which is a good thing.
Sebastian Cossa, Marco Kasper, Elmer Soderblom, and Carter Mazur are all examples of players who have come up in different junior and European leagues. However, one Red Wings prospect is currently making waves in Russia.
Dmitri Buchelnikov is having a solid season in Russia’s top league, the KHL. In 31 games, he has collected 29 points. He has the seventh-most points in the KHL and leads his team in points and assists.
The 21-year-old forward plays 16:53 a night, which will work wonders for the youngster’s development.
Buchelnikov hasn’t been afraid to shoot the puck this season. With 89 total shots, he averages 2.9 shots per game on goal. His nine percent shooting percentage is sustainable for the rest of the season.
He was recognized for his work in November.
According to this post on X, Buchelnikov had the highest player rating of any under-23-year-old in the KHL. He played nine games in November, recording 11 points and firing 22 shots on goal. His ice time ranged from 15 minutes to 19:50 for the month.
The KHL is the second toughest league in the world. For the Red Wings to have a player who is this young and this good in a man’s league, they should have fans salivating for his potential arrival in North America sometime in the future.
