Rangers trying to trade Jacob Trouba to Red Wings, but hurdles remain

The Rangers are attempting to trade captain Jacob Trouba to the Detroit Red Wings, according to multiple reports. But hurdles remain.

Trouba’s limited no-trade clause is going into effect on Monday (flipping from his full no-movement clause), and the Rangers had asked him last week to provide them with the 15 teams on his list, reported Arthur Staple of The Athletic.

Larry Brooks of The New York Post reported on Monday that Trouba is not happy about potentially being traded to Detroit, but that “he will ultimately be sent somewhere else, perhaps by waivers” if he tries to block a deal to the Red Wings.

As we noted while writing about Trouba’s Rangers future last month, trading the captain istricky.

Trouba is under contract through the 2025-26 season, with an annual cap hit of $8 million.

And his 2023-24 campaign was a struggle, as he was constantly exposed defensively.

Trouba also had a very tough go of it in the playoffs, combining defensive mistakes with an inordinate amount of penalties.

However, it should be noted that Trouba was playing at less than 100 percent toward the end of the regular season and in the playoffs, after suffering an ankle injury.
