Despite suffering its first loss of the year, No. 1 Maryland mens soccers season has been impressive to date. The Terps 15-game unbeaten run resulted in a staggering 13 postseason honors on Thursday.
Laurin Mack and Lasse Kelp have keyed the Big Tens second-best defense, and they received conference awards to further that point. Mack was named Goalkeeper of the Year after accruing eight shutouts during the regular season.
While center backs dont rack up jaw dropping stats their impact is hard to measure Kelps presence in the heart of Marylands defense is noticeable. He earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. The UMBC transfer has logged every minute this season, amassing some memorable slide tackles and a game-tying goal against Penn State.
Sasho Cirovski is one of the top coaches in college soccer, producing elite teams year-after-year. As part of the Terps historic season, Cirovski was named Big Ten Coach of the Year.
Maryland had a program-record six players selected to the All-Big Ten first-team. Mack, Luca Costabile, Kelp, Leon Koehl, Sadam Masereka and Stephane Njike have all been constants in the Terps starting lineup. Masereka and Njike have totalled 16 goals this season, with Koehl chipping in a trio of penalty-kick scores.
Albi Ndrenika is having a career year after battling injuries two seasons ago. The redshirt junior has dished out a team-high eight assists the fourth-highest mark in the conference. Ndrenika was recognized as the Terps lone All-Big Ten second-team honoree.
Despite Maryland relying on a relatively veteran rotation during its remarkable conference run, two first-year players have been a mainstay on the pitch. Rocket Ritarita and Farouk Cisse have logged over 1,000 combined minutes, with Ritarita producing two goals and five assists mostly during nonconference play. The duo earned All-Freshman team selections.
Costabile was named the teams Sportsmanship Honoree. The four-year starter has appeared in 71 games, producing some memorable goals this season. Costabile is hardly subbed off the pitch in Marylands ranked matches.
Seven of the Terps starting 11 received either All-Big Ten first-team or second-team nominations an acknowledgement of Marylands depth.
While the Terps brought home their first Big Ten regular season title since 2022, they are just scratching the surface. Maryland has set its sights on a national title, and this years team has the potential to do just that.
