Live updates: USWNT takes on Germany in Olympic soccer semis

For the second time at the Paris Summer Olympics, the U.S. women’s national team will take on Germany, and this time, the stakes are raised. The two nations were in the same group during pool play, and Team USA took that match 4-1, powered by a pair of goals from Sophia Smith and a tally each by Mallory Swanson and Lynn Williams. The U.S. remained unbeaten in the group stage, and topped Japan 1-0 thanks to an extra-time goal from Trinity Rodman that kept the match from going to penalty kicks.

Germany, meanwhile, needed a penalty shootout to get past Canada in the quarterfinals, and is now looking to knock the U.S. out of gold medal contention. Lea Schüller leads the way for Germany with three goals scored in the tournament. Germany has only medaled once in the Olympics a gold medal back in 2016 in Rio.

Tierna Davidson, who missed two games with a leg injury, will be back in the lineup, as will Sam Coffey, who served out a yellow card suspension. Both players are starting, much to the relief of fans who don’t have to watch the team struggle to make things work with an awkward center back/midfield combination.

Davidson’s return means that Emily Sonnett, who has been playing in the back with Naomi Girma, can come in as a defensive or midfield substitute. The U.S. will probably need it: After four games in less than two weeks, the USWNT starting lineup is likely gassed.

Defender Tierna Davidson returns to the matchday roster after missing the last two games with a leg contusion. Defender Emily Sams, who was activated in her absence, returns to the alternate list.

Germany will be playing without two key players, with leading scorer Lea Schüller and captain Alexandra Popp both out due to injury. It’s a blow for Germany but a small stroke of luck for the United States.
