Blackhawks Recall Korchinski, Make 2 More Roster Moves

The Chicago Blackhawks have made three roster moves the day after the first game under new head coach Anders Sorensen.

Petr Mrazek, who left the game against the Winnipeg Jets with an injury, was placed on the injured reserve. With that move, the Blackhawks recalled defenseman Kevin Korchinski and goalie Drew Commesso.

Mrazek injured his left groin, and now the situation in net, that already had Laurent Brossoit on the IR since the beginning of the season, sees the team’s starter join him. Fortunately, Arvid Soderblom, who will get the majority of the starts for the time being, has played great in limited action and really turned things around from last season. He may be 1-6-1 on the season, but he also has a very strong 2.60 GAA and .915 SV%.

Commesso hasn’t done great in the AHL, but he is one of the goalies the Blackhawks hope to see develop and turn into something good as well. The 22-year-old is 4-6-0 on the season with a 3.34 GAA and .879 SV%. He has been up with the Blackhawks before, but hasn’t played a game in the NHL yet. That should change soon, but expect Soderblom to carry the load in net.

Alec Martinez also got injured in the Blackhawks’ last game, so this is why Korchinski was recalled as well. The 20-year-old spent all of last season in the NHL, but has gotten some much-needed time in the AHL to begin this season since he wasn’t eligible to in 2023-24.

Korchinski has two goals and 11 points in 21 games this season for the Rockford IceHogs. Last season he played 76 games for Chicago, scoring five goals and 15 points. He will most likely see some action because he wouldn’t have been called up if that wasn’t going to be the case.

The Blackhawks have a lot to deal with and work through right now as they hope to turn things around.
