The 2024-25 Chicago Blackhawks have gotten good goaltending from Petr Mrazek and Arvid Soderblom. They also have Laurent Brossoit on the way back from injury following his signing during free agency.
When Brossoit comes back, it is unclear what Chicago is going to do. Soderblom is only a handful of games away from no longer being waiver exempt so they need to make a decision before that happens. Are they going to carry three goalies? Will Brossoit come back before Soderblom reaches that milestone?
A solution to this issue may have presented itself by the way of social media on Monday and Tuesday. Kevin Weekes reported that the Carolina Hurricanes are shopping around for a good goalie.
They are missing both Pyotr Kochetkov (concussion protocol) and Frederik Anderson (knee surgery) right now which leaves them in a bad spot. Spencer Martin played in their most recent game and Yaniv Perets backed him up. At 15-5-1 and in the mix for the Metropolitan Division, dont expect Carolina to just sit back on this.
The Hawks could trade them one of their guys for the right price. This is an opportunity for a rebuilding team to take advantage of a contender in need. It probably wouldnt be Soderblom because hes young with a high ceiling but the other two could be in play.
For Mrazek, he has already played for the Carolina Hurricanes so going there wouldnt be anything new for him. It would just depend on if they wanted him over someone else who may be available around the league.
Weekes then reported on Tuesday that Kochetkov is progressing well with his injury but they are still looking at goalies on the market. We’ll see if Chicago is a part of that discussion for them.
Anything can happen but its worth checking in on if youre Kyle Davidson. There is nothing wrong with adding more prospects and draft picks if you can get them. Carolina hasnt been shy about moving assets to try and win during their open window.
Letting go of a good goalie, regardless of which one, is not an easy decision to make. If Weekes report is true, and theres no reason to think its not, the Hawks should be involved and ready to make a smart move if they can.
