Bayern Munichs Jonathan Tah grateful to wear captains armband for Germany

At the beginning of the season, Bayern Munichs Joshua Kimmich was awarded the honor of the captaincy for Germanys national team. Kimmich took over the reins from his Bayern teammate, Manuel Neuer. Kimmichs tenure got off to a rocky start with an unprecedented 2-0 loss to Slovakia in FIFA World Cup Qualifying. Kimmichs leadership put Germany back on track with three straight wins.

Earlier this week, Kimmich picked up an ankle injury and Julian Nagelsmann was forced to find a different player to assume the captaincy duties for the Luxembourg match. Bayerns Jonathan Tah was the obvious selection.

Its a big honor and means a lot to me, said Tah (via @iMiaSanMia). But its not about myself, its about qualifying for the World Cup. Nevertheless, Im grateful to have lived this moment.

Tah will be happy to hand the armband back to Kimmich for the crucial match on Monday against Slovakia. A win or draw will see Germany win Group A and automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
