Angel Reese puts Chicago Sky on notice after another dismal season: 'Im not settling for the same s*** we did this year'

Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese is never one to mince words.

Looking at how poorly the Sky have played this season with a 9-30 record, it’s no surprise that Reese would vocalize her frustration. Under first-year Sky head coach Tyler Marsh, they’ve been even worse than last year, currently 12th out of 13 teams. Chicago finished the 2024 campaign 13-27 and fired coach Teresa Weatherspoon, a move Reese was unhappy about at the time.

Im not settling for the same s*** we did this year, Reese told Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune. We have to get good players. We have to get great players. Thats a non-negotiable for me.

Im willing and wanting to play with the best. And however I can help to get the best here, thats what Im going to do this offseason. So its going to be very, very important this offseason to make sure we attract the best of the best because we cant settle for what we have this year.

Reese expressed a desire for the front office to surround her with great players, as any competitor would. Point guard Courtney Vandersloot was the Sky’s biggest pickup in free agency and she suffered a torn ACL early in the season. In general, Chicago has struggled to bring in top free agents.

“I am very vocal about what we need and what I want,” Reese told the Tribune. “Id like to be here for my career, but if things dont pan out, obviously I might have to move in a different direction and do whats best for me. But while I am here, Im going to try to stay open-minded about what I have here and maximize that as much as I can.”

Reese went on to say that to compete, Chicago will have to go beyond moves like the one that brought Vandersloot back to the team she won a 2021 championship with.

We cant rely on Courtney to come back at the age that shes at, Reese said. I know shell be a great asset for us, but we cant rely on that. We need someone probably a little younger with some experience, somebody whos been playing the game and is willing to compete for a championship and has done it before.

For all the criticism she receives, Reese has averaged nothing less than a double-double since entering the WNBA last year, whether it’s done with “mebounds” or not. This season, Reese is posting more than 14 points and 12 rebounds in 31 minutes per game.

Off the court, Reese has continued to stay busy, and recently made her big-screen debut at the Venice Film Festival in director Kathryn Bigelow’s thriller, “A House of Dynamite.” Reese makes her cameo in the film alongside stars like Idris Elba, Anthony Ramos and Rebecca Ferguson.
