Las Vegas Aces star Aja Wilson went off in historic fashion on Sunday night.
Wilson became the first player in WNBA history to drop 30 points and 20 rebounds in a single game while leading the Aces to a narrow 94-86 win over the Connecticut Sun. Wilson finished with 32 points and matched her career-high with 20 rebounds while shooting 13-of-25 from the field in the win at Michelob Ultra Arena.
The outing came just two days after Wilson dropped 29 points on her 29th birthday in a 90-86 win over the Seattle Storm.
The Aces came out slow on Sunday night, and even fell into a double-digit hole early in the second quarter. But they rallied just before halftime, and held the Sun scoreless for the final half of the period, to tie things up before halftime.
Las Vegas then jumped up in front just minutes into the third quarter, after Chelsea Gray hit a pair of free throws, and the Aces never looked back. They used an 8-0 burst near the end of the quarter to push their lead and then led the entire rest of the way to secure the eight-point win.
Marina Mabrey led the Sun with 22 points while shooting 8-of-16 from the field. Saniya Rivers added 17 points off the bench, and Leila Lacan finished with 13 points. They were the only three Connecticut players to hit double figures. The loss dropped the Sun to 5-25 on the season, which is the worst record in the league.
Jackie Young added 21 points and six assists in the win for the Aces to go with Wilsons 32-point night. Jewell Lloyd added 12 points off the bench, too, and the team shot just shy of 50% from the field as a group while out-rebounding the Sun by 17. The win, their sixth in their last seven games, pushed them to 18-14 on the season.
Wilson is averaging 21.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per game this season. The three-time league MVP picked up her seventh All-Star nod this season, too. While the Aces are still nine games back from the Minnesota Lynx in the standings, Wilson is in the midst of another dominant run while averaging just shy of 30 points per game over her last three contests. If she can keep the pace up over the last stretch, theres no reason the Aces cant at least close the gap in the standings before the playoffs start.
