The Mets have officially released left-handed reliever Jake Diekman, the team announced Saturday.
Diekman’s release comes just days after the Mets designated the southpaw for assignment on July 29.
The Mets signed Diekman over the offseason after he spent his first 12 seasons with eight other teams including the Phillies, Rangers, Athletics, White Sox, Royals, Diamondbacks, Red Sox and Rays.
Diekman, 37, had an up-and-down year with the Mets. After a solid April, Diekman was great in May, pitching to a 2.89 ERA in that month. He pitched to a 6.75 ERA in June and those struggles persisted into July, despite his epic save against the Yankees on July 23.
The Mets’ decision on Diekman came as the team restructured its bullpen with trade acquisitions including Phil Maton, Huascar Brazoban, Ryne Stanek and Tyler Zuber.
