Insider Reveals Oilers’ Considered Bowman For Bigger Role

EDMONTON — When one door closes, another one opens.

The Edmonton Oilers and Jeff Jackson got their guy for General Manager. Last week they hired Stan Bowman to be the new GM and Executive Vice President. This concluded a search that began once the Stanley Cup Final was completed.

Bowman and Jackson have a relationship going back for many years. Jackson represented Alex DeBrincat when he was a member of the Chicago Blackhawks. Bowman was the GM at the time.

On the DFO Rundown podcast (co-hosted by Frank Seravalli and Jason Gregor) they discussed the new Oilers GM. Seravalli revealed how long the organization has been interested in bringing Bowman into the fold, “this is a guy that the organization has long had interest in. Going back to Jeff Jackson’s hiring last year.”

“Had Stan Bowman been eligible I think he would have been a candidate for the CEO of Hockey Ops position.”

Obviously, Bowman was still suspending from working in the NHL at the time. But it’s interesting to note that Jackson isn’t the only member of Oilers management who like what the new GM has to offer the organization.

Time will tell if Bowman being the Oilers’ GM is a good move or a bad one. The first thing on his plate is getting Leon Draisaitl signed to a contract extension.
