It was the first time that the 55-year-old Pegula has appeared in public since she suffered a cardiac episode in June 2022, which was revealed to the public by their daughter Jessica in a February 2023 article in the Players Tribune. The Pegulas purchased the Sabres in 2011 from Tom Golisano in 2011 and the Bills from the estate of Ralph Wilson in 2014, and Kim served as team president of both clubs until the health crisis forced Mr. Pegula to take over in 2023.

According to a report from Tim Graham of the Athletic in May, Pegula, 73, filed legal documentation in 2023 and was appointed plenary guardian of his wife’s assets, placing her holdings in a trust, and that a succession plan for the two franchises was put in place, with Pegula’s eldest daughter Laura as a point person.
The 41-year-old has been involved in her fathers oil business and recently has been more visible in events such as the NFL owners meetings in Orlando, FL. She is also serving as an alternate governor for the Sabres and has represented the club at recent NHL meetings and appeared at her father’s side at the press conference in April announcing the hiring of head coach Lindy Ruff.
