Matt Law reveals what he was “pretty much told” at start of the season about Maresca’s future

Chelsea insider Matt Law has revealed what he was told about the future of Enzo Maresca at the start of the season.

Maresca is now into his second season in charge at Stamford Bridge having replaced Mauricio Pochettino in the summer of 2024.

The Italian oversaw a successful first season in which he guided Chelsea back to the Champions League, and won the Conference League and Club World Cup.

Chelsea have started the current campaign well, and sit third in the league six points behind early leaders Arsenal.

The Blues are the second highest scorers with 21 goals, two behind Manchester City on 23, whilst theyve made a solid start in the Champions League, and are in the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup.

Maresca was starting to come under pressure after back to back league defeats to Brighton and Manchester United, but Chelsea reportedly havet considered making a mid-season change.

In fact the Blues fully believe Maresca is the right man to lead the project, and Law has revealed what he was told about his future at the start of the season.

Dont get me wrong, theyd love to win it (the Carabao Cup), but its not going to impact the managers future, he told The London Is Blue Podcast.

So, at the start of the season, I was pretty much told that the sort of loose start of season target would be they need to qualify for the Champions League again, and they want a run in the Champions League and they want to compete in it.

So obviously, going out in the group league phase would be very bad, or not qualifying for the top eight, and then going out in that sort of playoff round, I think would also be probably judged a failure.

Chelsea currently sit 12th in the Champions League standings with seven points from their opening four matches in the competition.

The Blues are two points outside the top eight, which automatically qualifies you for the last 16, whilst anywhere from ninth to 24th puts you in a play off round.

Chelsea have tough games remaining against Barcelona, Napoli, Atalanta, whilst they finish at home to Cypriot side Pafos.
