The Competition in Ohio States Wide Receiver Room Produces the Best Product

The Ohio State Buckeyes’ wide receivers have prove year after year that they are the best position group in the entire country.

Since current offensive coordinator Brian Hartline took the position group over in 2018, Ohio States wide receivers have been the best in both college football and the NFL.

This begs the question: what is the foundation of this success? Is it elite recruiting? Is it the development of talent? Is it elite teammates? Is it a combination of all of these factors? There is never going to be a black and white answer to this question, but when asked about it, Seattle Seahawks’ star Jaxon Smith-Njigba claimed that it was the competition.

The room that JSN stood out in featured Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Jameson Williams, Emeka Egbuka, and Marvin Harrison Jr. If you are keeping track, each of those guys was selected in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Harrison Jr., who was cutting his teeth in that room before becoming the leader of it in 2023, shared similar thoughts as JSN. The highly-touted received stated that he felt like an underdog in the crowded room.

Harrison Jr. was a four-star recruit and the son of an NFL Hall-of-Famer, which is crazy to believe he was an “underdog” in this wide receiver room. The competition that the elite skill level breeds is unprecedented.

The way that these superstars handle it is what makes them stand apart. It was that way in 2018, just as it was in 2022, and the same as it is now in 2025.

Junior wide receiver Carnell Tate would be considered the best wide receiver in college football if it werent for his teammate, star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. Together, the two have created the best duo in America and are a major reason why these Buckeyes are thinking about repeating as National Champions in 2025.

The best example of these two working together came against Penn State in Week 10. Tate finished the game with six catches for 124 yards and a score, while Smith had five catches for 125 and two scores. They showed that individually, they are legit stars and together, they are unstoppable.

Next up for the Buckeyes is UCLA on Saturday Night inside the Horseshoe for a primetime matchup. Then they face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights before the big one against the Team Up North.

Its getting to be crunch time in this season, and the Buckeyes’ wide receivers are again leading the way.
