Dover's Jovie Meeker, Exeter's Will Tobin are Seacoast Athletes of the Week

The Seacoast high school Athletes of the Week for Nov. 3-8 are Dover High School girls volleyball player Jovie Meeker and Exeter High School football player Will Tobin.

Meeker joins previous girls winners this fall: St. Thomas Aquinas High School girls soccer player Grace Cayer-Salem, Winnacunnet High School field hockey player Sofia Donatelli, Dover High School soccer player Norah O’Malley, York High School volleyball player Maya Babcock, Dover High School volleyball player Quinn Carberry, Marshwood High School field hockey player Hazel Stout, St. Thomas Aquinas High School field hockey player Riley Thomas, Portsmouth High School girls soccer player Lily Carroll and St. Thomas Aquinas High School cross country athlete Katelyn Kreycik.

Tobin joins previous boys winners this fall: Marshwood High School football player Sam Therrien, Portsmouth/Oyster River football player Kevin White, Marshwood High School soccer player Kian Denault, Marshwood High School football player Brady Isabelle, Dover High School golfer Ben Zbikowski, Spaulding High School golfer Evan Trepanier, Traip Academy football player JV Blanco, Exeter High School boys soccer player Reid LaBroad and St. Thomas Aquinas boys soccer player Angus Forman.

The weekly polls run each Monday through midnight Thursday, and can be found at seacoastonline.com/sports and fosters.com/sports. The honors are presented by York County Community College.

Meeker won the online poll by receiving nearly 35% of the online votes, totaling 514 to earn girls Athlete of the Week. Exeter cross country athlete Lexi Paterna had nearly 29% to finish second.

Winnacunnet soccer player Sophia Guimaraes had over 20%, Portsmouth Christian Academy soccer player Sylvie Wamberg had nearly 11% and Oyster River volleyball player Aubrey Young had over 5%, to round out the five nominees.

Meeker had 13 digs, four assists, one ace and one kill in the Green Wave’s Division I semifinal win over Londonderry on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

“I am not surprised by this, (Meeker) is a sophomore in a sea full of upperclassmen on this team and she performed beyond her years,” Dover head coach Whitney Carrier said. “Particularly (last) week, she was playing lights out and her confidence in herself came through. The confidence her teammates had in her was tremendous and that is a lot of pressure for a sophomore. She didnt blink at the big stage and held her own through our playoff run.”

Tobin won the online poll by receiving over 43% of the votes, totaling 573 to earn boys Athlete of the Week. Winnacunnet football player Dom Mancini finished second with over 27%.

St. Thomas Aquinas soccer player Ryan Dyer had over 15%, Somersworth football player Max DuBois had over 7% and Portsmouth/Oyster River football player Andy Brown had nearly 7%, to round out the five nominees.

Tobin recorded two catches for 43 yards and a receiving touchdown in a Division I first-round tournament loss to Winnacunnet, 34-14 on Friday, Nov. 7.

“I can’t say enough good things about Will,” Exeter head coach Bill Ball said. “He had a terrific senior year, and you could see it midway through his junior year that he was really starting to blossom as an athlete. He’s worked really hard … he made big plays for us all year long …. he had a terrific senior year and I couldn’t be more happy for him.”
