Streaking Patriots say 'more to come' from TreVeyon Henderson after 3-TD effort

Nov. 14 (UPI) — The sizzling New England Patriots think there is “a lot more to come” from TreVeyon Henderson after his 3-score effort in their eighth-straight win.

The rookie running back totaled 93 yards from scrimmage on 24 touches in the 27-14 triumph Thursday in Foxborough, Mass.

“He’s a beast,” Patriots offensive tackle Will Campbell said of Henderson. “It’s awesome that we’e got a bunch of really talented guys. A bunch of guys that contribute. His number was called and he took advantage of every opportunity he had.

“There is a lot more to come.”

Quarterback Justin Fields ran for a 5-yard score to end the first drive of the game to give the Jets an early lead, but they never led again. Henderson proceeded to end the next possession — a 13-play, 69-yard drive — with a physical 7-yard touchdown run, tying the score.

Henderson caught a pitch near the 15-yard line to start that play. He broke two tackles before being surrounded by Jets players near the 3-yard line. Campbell and several other Patriots players then swarmed into the area and pushed the rookie in the end zone for his third touchdown of the season.

“We work on that specific drill — push the pile drill — during the week at practice,” Campbell said. “It’s something we pride ourselves on. It paid off tonight.”

The Patriots defense forced a three-and-out on the next drive. Henderson followed with a 7-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter fo a 14-7 Patriots lead.

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye hit Henderson with a 6-yard touchdown pass with 7:46 remaining in the third quarter for a 21-7 advantage. Fields threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to John Metchie on the next possession.

Patriots kicker Andres Borregales made two fourth-quarter field goals for the final points of the night.

The Patriots edged the Jets 23-15 in first downs and 336 to 245 in total yards. Maye completed 25 of 34 passes for 281 yards and a score in the victory. Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs caught nine passes for a game-high 105 yards.

Fields completed 15 of 26 passes for 116 yards and a score for the Jets. He also ran for 67 yards in the loss.

Henderson earned his third-consecutive start in place of injured starting running back Rhamondre Stevenson. He was in for a season-high 59 snaps (88%). Unlike his Week 10 performance, when he logged 147 rushing yards and two scores on 14 carries and exploded for several long runs, the rookie showed off his ability to grind out tough yards and contribute as a blocker.

“I would say the best couple of runs he had were there late in the game when it was tough sledding, and we’re in five-minute, and they know we’re going to run, and they’re blitzing and everything else,” Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said of Henderson. “Looked like we were going to be short, and he’s able to knife through there and keep his pads down and pick up a huge first down.

“No home runs, but I thought he grinded out pretty much what was there.”

Stevenson missed his third-consecutive game due to a toe injury. The Patriots elevated D’Ernest Johnson from their practice squad before Thursday’s win. He totaled three carries for 6 yards against the Jets.

Stevenson logged 279 rushing yards and three scores on 83 carries through his first eight starts this season. He also caught 16 passes for 169 yards. He averaged a career-low 3.4 yards per carry through the first half of 2025.

Henderson logged 492 rushing yards and five scores on 100 carries. He caught 26 passes for 165 yards and a score through the first 11 games of his career. He averaged 4.9 yards per carry so far this season.

The rookie told reporters Thursday that he felt like the game is slowing down.

“I think it’s a journey,” Henderson said. “The NFL comes with a lot of highs and lows. I think the biggest thing is just the preparation going into the week. With the reps that we have, just trying to take advantage of them and continue to try to go and get better as a player.”

The Patriots (9-2) will take on the Cincinnati Bengals (3-6) in Week 12.

The Bengals allowed the most rushing yards (141.1) per game to running backs so far this season. They also allowed the fourth-most receiving yards (44.3) per game to the position through the first half of 2025.”
