It was the best throw Justin Fields made all night.

Down the left sideline, dropped perfectly in to Adonai Mitchell, making his debut with the New York Jets.

Mitchell didn’t catch it, though.

He had another drop later in the first half, too.

This, in part, is why Mitchell was available before the trade deadline at all.

The Indianapolis Colts pretty much plopped him on as a bonus piece in the Sauce Gardner trade, sending two first-round picks with Mitchell to get the star cornerback.

Mitchell hadn’t broken out in Indy, and although the parts before the football arrived looked good on Thursday night against the Patriots, the final product was lacking.

There’s still time, of course. Mitchell can get better. He can grow more comfortable in the Jets’ offense and with his quarterback.

But it’s a shaky start for a player who has already had plenty of shaky in his NFL career. On this night, he needed steady, but he couldn’t provide that.
