Bears Football & the Effects of Winning

SPRINGFIELDTo say Missouri States first year competing in at the FBS level, in Conference USA, has been a success, would be an understatement.

The Bears (6-3, 4-1) have soared above preseason expectations, outside Springfield, and showed their jump from the Missouri Valley Conference to Conference USA wasnt just a good move, it was a GREAT move, and one that wasnt too robust for the program.

Entering Saturday, MO State will host league foe, UTEP (2-7, 1-4). On paper, the Miners dont have a punchers chance against the Bears, but thats why they play the game, and MSU Head Coach believes that whole heartedly. Its the reason why he talked so passionately, during this Mondays weekly presser, about NOT allowing the team to relish in their win over Liberty, too much.

Its not like Beard isnt happy with his programs progress, or that he doesnt believe in celebrating each win, but he also knows the risk of teams getting caught up in what theyve done, rather than what still needs to be accomplished. His message of planning to put his players through a rigorous practice on Tuesday, as a gentle reminder of the hard work it takes to win, is a clear sign hes not letting his team get comfortable with being comfortable.

In the grand scheme, Athletic Director Patrick Ransdell noted how impactful having a winning football program has been for Missouri State. Between the upbeat spirit around the Ozarks, brand awareness, thanks to nationally televised games, and the donations that have poured in, the football program has finally become a major part of success for Bears athletics, instead of just a back-of-mind team.

Take a listen to the whole episode to hear Beard and Ransdells thoughts on the effects of winning. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
