A trooper from the Florida Highway Patrol who was providing security for Florida A&M coach James Colzie III during FAMUs game at Florida Atlantic on Sept. 6 died less than two weeks after he suffered a broken leg when a player rolled into him while he was standing on the sidelines.
According to the Fraternal Order of Police Florida State Lodge, Craig Gaines died on Sept. 19 at his residence. The Facebook post said Gaines death was related to medical complications from his leg injury.

On the first play of the third quarter, FAUs Jayshon Platt was pushed out of bounds on an end around in the FAMU sideline. A Florida A&M player pursuing Platt rolled into Gaines right leg after attempting a tackle and Gaines fell to the ground.
Certain flags in the state of Florida were lowered to half-staff in honor of Gaines on Monday.
Gaines had been a member of the Florida Highway Patrol since 2008 and was a Navy veteran.
