Watch: Mikaela Shiffrin suffers crash seconds away from 100th World Cup victory

Mikaela Shiffrin, the American skier, has apologised for scaring everybody after suffering a horror crash while on course to become the first person to a century of World Cup wins.

The 29-year-old was taking part in the giant slalom in Vermont and seemed to be on course for the historic milestone before misjudging one of the gates near the finish and losing control of her skis.

The double Olympic champion then rolled head over heels before crashing into the safety netting. Shiffrin had been leading by 0.32sec after the first run, with the accident happening on her second descent of the mountain. She left the slope on a rescue sled before being assessed at a clinic.

Not really too much cause for concern at this point, I just cant move. I have a pretty good abrasion and something stabbed me, she later said in a video posted on X. I am so sorry to scare everybody and it looks like all scans so far are clear, so thank you for the support and concern.

The crash also meant that she could not go for her 100th win in Sundays slalom, which she has won six times previously at the same event.

Swedens Sara Hector, the Olympic champion, won Saturdays giant slalom following Shiffrins crash. Its so sad of course for Mikaela, a crash like that after she was skiing so well. It breaks my heart, she said.

Shiffrin passed Lindsey Vonns womens mark of 82 World Cup victories in January last year during a giant slalom in Kronplatz, Italy.

Then, in March, she broke Swedish great Ingemar Stenmarks Alpine mark for most World Cup wins when she captured her 87th career race.

She is already established as one of the all-time greats of skiing, with five overall World Cup titles, two Olympic gold medals and a silver, and seven world championships.
