Kings, Ducks unveil new uniforms as part of brand redesign

The NHL’s two Southern California teams — the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks — unveiled new uniforms on Wednesday.

Both teams lean into throwback aspects of their respective franchises, starting with brand-new logos.

The Kings’ logo, unveiled last week, includes elements of the 1990s era plus the original crown from the team’s introduction in 1967. The Ducks use a “refreshed version” of their classic logo.

Los Angeles was the first to reveal its new black, silver and white threads, posting a video with appearances from Snoop Dogg and the South Park character Eric Cartman.

The Kings’ sweaters represent the organization’s recent brand change and include the new logo. They will be worn for the first time during the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas this weekend.

“This has been an extensive and collaborative process, and we are thrilled to roll this out to our fans and the city of Los Angeles,” Kings president and Hockey Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille said in a news release after the logo reveal. “This evolution is rooted in our 57-year history and embraces the elements of our eras. It also involved interface and feedback with players both past and present, and it sets the stage for extensions and new iterations in the future.”

The home uniforms include a white patch near the bottom of the sweater and the sleeves, while the away ones have a black patch in the same areas.

The home look also has a new matte black helmet. According to the Kings, it is believed this will be the first time an NHL team will use a matte black helmet full time.

For Anaheim, the franchise leaned into its role in Orange County for its redesign.

“As our organization enters a new chapter of Anaheim Ducks hockey, we are proud to reveal our new, refreshed logo and uniform kit that identifies with the Orange County community,” Anaheim Ducks owners Susan and Henry Samueli said in a news release. “The Ducks are a symbol of Orange County, and our pivot to orange with an updated, iconic logo encompasses our past, present and future.”

The redesigned logo will appear on the front of the home and away sweaters, while a refined version of the previous logo is now on the shoulder patch as the secondary logo.

The jerseys include a new typeface and number palette modeled after Orange County’s art deco styling, which was commonly used in the citrus industry at that time, according to the Ducks. There’s also a modernized number typography with shades of orange, black, gold and white.

Anaheim sent the uniforms to Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout and Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes, who’s from Orange County.
