Tomlin: Wilson ‘in consideration’ to start vs. Jets

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin on Tuesday said quarterback Russell Wilson is “in consideration” to start Pittsburgh’s Week 7 game against the New York Jets.

Tomlin said he would make his choice between Wilson and Justin Fields as the starting quarterback “closer to game time.”

Tomlin said Wilson showed last week that he was healthy and started knocking the rust off in his first full work week of the regular season.

Fields threw for 145 yards and ran for 59 yards and two touchdowns in the Steelers’ victory against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. He is 106-of-160 for 1,106 yards and 5 touchdowns and an interception. He also has rushed for 231 yards and 5 TDs.

Wilson missed the first five games of the season with a calf injury before he was active as the No. 2 quarterback for Week 6, Fields has guided Pittsburgh to a 4-2 record while completing 66.3% of his passes for 6.9 yards per attempt and committing just two turnovers.

Wilson had been named the starter heading into Week 1 before aggravating a calf injury in practice leading up to the season opener.
